Looking to cross something off that "To-Do list" that is easy, inexpensive, and can make your kitchen look brand new? Repairing or cleaning grout tile is a do-it-yourself item that is perfect for a weekend project. Since the surface of grout is porous it can easily trap dirt in the grout which leads to discoloration and damage. Now that you know you have a problem it is time to find a solution.

The first step to repairing grout is to choose the right grout for the job. Grout choices consist of four different types: sanded, unsanded, acrylic latex, or epoxy. How do you know which type to use? Measure the space between your tiles. If the space between the tiles is less than 1/8 of an inch use unsanded, acrylic or epoxy grout. If the grout space is larger than 1/8 it is suggested that you use a sanded grout. Also, don't forget to match the grout color before making your final purchase.

The next step is to clean the grouted area with a 1-to1- vinegar and water mixture. Use a spray bottle to apply the mixture directly to the area. Next, use a grout saw to remove any damaged grout and then dampen the joints with a wet rag.

Now you are ready to grout. Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's directions and begin grouting the tile. It is important to fill all of the joints completely and smooth over the surface with a damp sponge to remove excess grout. Try to only wipe the area once to avoid removing the grout from between the tiles.

Allow the grout to set firmly and then clean with a damp rag. Once a cloudy haze appears the gout is dry and you may remove the haze with a dry towel or cloth.

Cleaning your grout with oxygenated cleaners or a mild detergent is an effective way to clean grout that is slightly too moderately dirty. Mix either of these cleaners with water based on the directions and spray onto a tile with a spray bottle. Soak the tile with the mixture and scrub the grout with a small toothbrush. Once you are finished wash the tile with a damp sponge.

Another easy and inexpensive method for cleaning everyday grout dirt is shaving cream. Simply squirt onto the grout line, allow to sit for a few minutes, scrub with a small toothbrush and wash clean with a damp sponge.

If your tile grout is more discolored than dirty try using a small amount of baking soda and white vinegar. Mix both of these ingredients together until it forms a paste-like consistency. Apply the mixture to a small area of the grout and scrub the grout lines with a small toothbrush. Rinse with a damp sponge once complete.
