Replacing an Exterior Door

Depending on the type of door that is currently on display in your home, there are a number of signs that it’s time to update your front door. If it’s a wood door, check for signs of rotting, moisture absorption, or bubbling in the wood. If it’s a fiberglass door, check for cracks in the material. If your exterior door is made of steel, it may need to be replaced if it shows signs of rusting in chips, dents, or scratches.

Starting the Door Installation Process

The exterior door installation process is no easy feat – make sure you have the right tools, measurements, safety equipment and materials to get the job done in a secure fashion. The last thing you need is to install a door only to have your heat escape in small seals throughout the cold winter months.

Here are a few tips to help you get started with your door installation process:

  • Prepare the Opening - If there is an old door in place, carefully remove it. Make sure the subsill on your opening is level (if it is not for some reason, you will need to use a beveled board, shim or spacer board) – this same action may be necessary if you need the exterior door to clear a high floor surface (such as thick carpeting).

  • Place the Door - After carefully applying caulk along your subsill, place the door – bottom-first – into your opening. The most difficult step is the next one – squaring and securing the assembly. You may want to consult a professional door installer to ensure this is done correctly, for the process varies from home to home.

  • Finalize with Insulation - The final step is to add insulation to the edges of your new door frame. Make sure you’re using low-expansion foam as some foam can expand too much and eventually distort the shape of your door frame.

Of course, the most efficient way to set a new front door in your home is to hire a professional. Whether you’re looking to check “door installation” off of your “To Do” list or even a couple of additional items, contact your local Mr. Handyman to schedule a variety of home repair services.
