In most areas city codes call for a "panic bar" type exit handle for commercial doors. Many stores still have the old solution of a bar across the door that may or may not be easily removed in case of an emergency. This panic bar stays locked from the outside but by striking and pushing anywhere along it's length inside it unlatches and the door opens. These save lives when there is an emrgency such as a fire.
