What are the stages of drywall installation or repair?

The first step of drywall repair is to assess the issue. Did this hole or crack happen because of a one-time thing, like a furniture nick, or is it the product of a long-term water leak? Once you’ve determined how the drywall got damaged, you’ll need to solve that problem first.

Once the underlying problem is addressed, you can move on to taping, mudding, sanding, priming, and painting the repaired area.

Can you paint drywall?

Yes! Drywall that is properly prepared can be painted. However, because drywall is very porous, it will absorb paint quickly and could lead to an uneven finish if the proper paint and primer are not used.

To avoid this issue, clean your area thoroughly, sand and smooth your surface, remove all drywall dust, and properly mud and primer your space before painting with the proper type of paint.

How long does repairing or replacing drywall take?

It depends! Some minor drywall ceiling repairs can be completed within an hour or so, whereas drywall crack repairs that threaten the structural integrity of a home will take longer. The best way to get the correct time estimate is to discuss your project’s unique situation with your local Mr. Handyman customer service representative.

Once we have all the information about your project, we can provide more accurate information.
