Benefits of Siding Repair

Repairing your siding at the first sign of damage carries a number of benefits, including:

  • It prevents water damage. Whether a few drops or a significant leak, once water has infiltrated your home, it can cause a number of issues, including mold, wood rot, mildew and staining on interior walls. These issues will inevitably lead to structural or health concerns. The protection that siding provides is the best way to avoid structural damage to your home or mold-related health issues for your family. Because of this, your siding must not be allowed to fail.
  • It increases energy efficiency. Just like siding keeps water out, it also works to keep air in. Cracks or gaps in your siding could lead to your air leaking out, causing your HVAC unit to work overtime. When your systems have to work harder, your energy bill will be higher.
  • It keeps your home secure. When your siding has cracks or holes in it, it can be encouraging to pests, bugs, or rodents who are looking for a home. Repairing that damage will help eliminate any unwanted roommates!
  • It improves curb appeal. Whether we like it or not, first impressions matter! Why not put your best foot forward with a beautifully-sided home? Not only will this make your home look better, but it will also improve its value, which is a big deal if you plan on selling or refinancing your mortgage.

Investing in siding repair today will improve your home’s value, energy efficiency, and security and ensure a secure and comfortable living environment for years to come.

Siding, Fascia, & Soffit Repair FAQ

Do you have questions about your upcoming project? Here are some of our customers’ most frequently asked questions about our siding, fascia, and soffit repair services. Don't hesitate to contact your local Mr. Handyman team if you have further questions that are not listed below.

How do I know if my fascia, soffit, or siding needs repair?

The best way to know if your fascia, soffit, or siding needs to be repaired is to perform periodic inspections. We suggest quarterly. Walk around your home and take notice of any changes, or things that look odd. This way, you’ll catch the problem when it’s still small!

Things to look out for during a fascia, soffit, or siding inspection include peeling or flaking paint, rotting rood, cracking, sagging, decay, water damage, or discoloration. Visible water damage inside the home is also a strong clue that you have a plumbing leak, or that something is not water tight on the outside of the home.

Can Mr. Handyman replace wooden siding on older homes?

Greater Jacksonville has a long and rich history, and homes were built with different siding materials throughout. Plywood siding products (T1-11, or similar) were popular on a generation of homes. While these homes are 20-50 years old, these siding products are widely available for repair and replacement needs.

Prior to that, wooden lap siding in pine or cedar, and tongue and groove (T&G) siding were popular on homes and garages in their day.  Homes in Riverside-Avondale and San Marco can be 100 years old, or older, and have many homes and garages with these products. While harder to find, we do have some specialty suppliers we work through and we can match, or get very close to matching, most of these siding profiles to assist in your home repairs.

How long do siding repairs take?

The amount of time it takes to repair siding will vary depending on the repair's complexity, type, and size. Caught early, minor repairs can be accomplished in a single visit. Extensive repairs may include not only rotten siding replacement but also include replacing insulation and structural members behind the siding. This is time consuming, and can get expensive. Do not let your siding decay to a point that this is your situation.

Can aluminum & vinyl siding be repaired?

Both vinyl and aluminum siding involve locking one tier into the next via locking channels.  Sometimes a “repair” is as simple as locking everything back together after a strong storm or some form of impact dislodged them. In other cases the vinyl or aluminum is actually damaged.  Vinyl gets brittle with age and is often damaged by string trimmers low on the home. It literally crumbles. In these cases, the damaged tiers of siding must be replaced.

Note that colored siding products, like aluminum and vinyl, are not faded due to sun and age when new from the carton. Therefore, they will not blend well, color-wise, with your existing siding.  With age and time in the sun, these too will fade and weather. Color choices are also more limited today when vinyl is less popular for new construction.
