I'm Selling My Home - How Do I Make it Stand Out?

Mr. Handyman of Wheaton-Hinsdale offers ideas for updating and selling your home

Summer is a prime time to spruce up your home when getting ready to sell. Selling a home can be challenging, so it’s important to find ways to have yours stand out from the crowd. While some tasks can be done by homeowners, it’s a great time to call in the professionals to help give your home a proper facelift.

Create terrific curb appeal, so when potential buyers pull up outside the home, they immediately want to see the inside. Consider painting the house, trim, and shutters, and spruce up the entry with a new front door, potted plants, and a nice welcome mat. Tasteful exterior lighting, for the entry and along landscaping borders, will add a nice touch. Mow the lawn regularly to keep it looking fresh.

Keep your deck or patio in good condition. Remove and replace rotted wood planks and railings on your deck; pressure wash and paint or re-stain it if needed. Keep your deck or patio swept free of debris, and furnish it to create a nice, cozy space for entertaining. You want potential homebuyers to be able to imagine themselves using the space.

Declutter the interior of the home by removing personal items and excess furniture; this will help the rooms appear larger. Clean out your closets until they’re about 3/4 full to give the impression of adequate closet space. Make updates to the kitchen and bathrooms as necessary; cabinet doors and drawers may need adjustment or repair if they don’t operate correctly or are out of alignment. Consider new hardware, such as knobs, drawer pulls, and faucets, and add a tile backsplash or new countertops for an updated look.

Remember, if you sell, there will be a home inspection. Mr. Handyman can make any needed repairs to help keep your home in top selling condition. For more information, please contact:
