I want to remodel my home, but I don't know where to start. Any ideas?

Mr. Handyman of Wheaton-Hinsdale Offers Ideas for Remodeling

Dark wood kitchen with white cabinetry

Homeowners may want to remodel their home for any number of reasons. After living in a house for many years, many owners make changes to update the style of the home, either for their own comfort and convenience, or to prepare for a sale.

Repainting the home in neutral or more stylish colors can make a big difference. Updating curtains or adding window shutter blinds, replacing carpet, adding ceiling fans, and switching out light fixtures can also have a dramatic impact inside a home. Dark wood trim can be painted white, older kitchen appliances can be replaced with stainless steel, and countertops can be upgraded to granite, quartz, or another stylish but functional material. These upgrades are relatively inexpensive, but deliver a definite splash of style.

If you love your home but your family is outgrowing it, consider adding a room addition. Depending on the size of your yard and the style of your house, it’s not difficult to add a bedroom and bathroom to your existing floorplan. If you have an unused attic space with easy access, that could be remodeled to become additional living space as well. An unfinished basement is another potential space that can accommodate an additional bedroom or bath, especially if your yard is too small to expand outwards.

Remodeling can also help seniors to age in place, allowing them to live comfortably in their own homes instead of moving to an assisted living facility. Modifications can be made in bathrooms (adding grab bars in tubs and showers, installing a walk-in tub, raising the toilet height) and in other rooms, such as kitchens and bedrooms, to make mobility easier and safer for the occupant. Ramps can be installed so those in wheelchairs can avoid stairs and maneuver in and out of the house quite easily.
