What are some easy ways to improve curb appeal?

Mr. Handyman of Wheaton-Hinsdale offers ideas for your home’s curb appeal

White home with manicured landscaping

It’s hard not to judge a book by its cover, especially when it applies to your home. The outside appearance of your house and yard offers your first chance to make a good impression; if it looks beautiful from the curb, it’s assumed that the interior looks great too.

Mow the lawn regularly, but don’t cut it too short. Shorter grass is more prone to weed invasion, and is less able to cope with environmental stresses, including drought. Fertilize the lawn regularly, and make sure it gets plenty of water to maintain its vitality. Plant perennial and annual flowers for nice pops of color throughout the growing season. Spread fresh mulch each year to protect your trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Your entryway will benefit from a nice welcome mat, an elegant front door, potted plants, and exterior lighting that focuses on the main entrance to the home and also along the landscaped borders of sidewalks and mulched beds.

If your windows are dated, consider updating them with a more modern style. This will help keep your home from losing heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer, saving money on your utility bills.

If you haven’t done so in awhile, consider painting the exterior of your home. A neutral paint like gray, beige, or taupe is appealing, and you can dress it up with different colored shutters and trim. Before painting, make needed repairs to siding and porches if they show cracks or other damage.

Declutter the exterior of your home as much as possible. A decorative wreath on the front door, and container plants and a flag on the front porch add a nice touch, but it’s best to designate a space in the backyard or garage for bicycles, toys, and lawn furniture to improve and maintain your home’s curb appeal.
