What are the best tips for Spring cleaning?

Mr. Handyman of Wheaton-Hinsdale offers spring cleaning tips for your home

Before the weather gets too nice to spend the days indoors, use this time to get some deep cleaning done around your house. Late winter/early spring is a great time to do some truly deep cleaning, where you allocate more time and attention to the things you don’t tackle on a daily or weekly basis.

Start by eliminating dust wherever you can. Not only will your home look better, you may find yourself sneezing less and breathing more easily. Clean the tops of ceiling fan blades and door casings, and along baseboards and window sills. Dust on top of and behind television sets. Wipe down the top of your refrigerator and above kitchen cabinets if they don’t extend to the ceiling.

Take a close look at your kitchen cabinets. Over time, grease and grime can build up in crevices and on cabinet fronts, especially if your range’s exhaust hood isn’t used during the cooking process. A good cabinet cream will remove build-up and dirt and will moisturize the wood.

Your refrigerator could also use a good cleaning, both on the outside and on the inside. Pull out the interior shelves and wash them with warm soapy water. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a sponge, then return shelves to their place. If it’s possible to pull the fridge away from the wall, clean behind and underneath it, too.

Organize closets throughout the home; toss or donate old clothing and accessories that take up space but never get worn. If they’re higher end merchandise, try selling them on eBay. Re-organize your personal closet by color, by season, or by type of clothing for a quicker morning routine.

You’ll be using patio furniture again soon; wipe down tables and chairs, and launder cushions (or spot clean) according to manufacturer’s directions. You’ll be enjoying them again in no time!
