Interior Door Installation Collinsville, IL

Most standard interior door replacements in Collinsville don't require a permit, especially when you're swapping like-for-like in an existing opening. Permits typically come into play when you're widening or creating a new doorway in a load-bearing wall, which involves structural work. Madison County and the City of Collinsville both follow the Illinois Building Code for residential projects, so if structural changes are part of your project, check with the Collinsville Building and Zoning Department before getting started. Our team can help you figure out the scope of your project upfront so there are no surprises on installation day.

Homes built in the Collinsville area before the 1980s often have non-standard rough-opening sizes, so you'll want to measure carefully before ordering any doors. Prehung units are usually the better call for older homes because they come with their own frame, making it easier to work around openings that have shifted or settled over the years. Solid-core doors are a popular upgrade choice in older homes, too, since they reduce sound transmission between rooms and hold up well against the humidity swings that come with Collinsville's Midwestern climate. If you're not sure which size or style suits your home, our team is happy to assess the existing openings before you spend any money on materials.

The Midwest brings real seasonal swings, and Collinsville is no exception. Summers here are hot and humid, while winters run cold and dry, and that back-and-forth causes wood doors to expand and contract noticeably over time. Solid wood doors are the most susceptible to this, which is why acclimating them to your home's indoor conditions for 48 to 72 hours before installation makes a real difference. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) doors are a good alternative if seasonal movement has been an ongoing issue in your home, since they're more dimensionally stable than natural wood. Proper sealing and painting also help keep moisture from working its way into the door material.

Panel doors, both two-panel and six-panel styles, are the most common choice in Collinsville area homes and tend to work well across a range of architectural styles. French doors are growing in popularity for spaces like home offices and dining rooms, since they let in light without fully opening up the room. Barn doors have also been a go-to for homeowners looking to add character to smaller spaces where a swing door isn't practical. If you're not sure which style fits your home's existing trim and architecture, our team can walk you through the options before you commit to anything.

Taking correct measurements is key! If you have an existing door, your Collinsville interior door installation pro will take measurements before disconnecting it from the frame. They will place the old structure on the new one to mark off the hinge mortises and latch location. This way, they’ll know exactly where the screws, hinges, and handle need to go later. Often, the length and width of the new structure may be slightly off, but your Collinsville handyman will mark that part accordingly and cut away any excess if needed.

Other important details include the hinge side and stop side of your new Collinsville interior door installation. For slab structures, it’s important to ensure all the connecting areas for strike plates, lockset, and hinges are in place so we can correctly install your French or standard bedroom doors. Now is also a good time to consider whether you want to paint it a different color.

Next, install the hinges and strike plate on the frame before installing your new interior door replacement by setting it in place and inserting the hinge pins. As long as there is a 1/8 inch clearance at the top and strike side and 1/16 inch on the hinge side, you’re set!

In Collinsville, interior door installations can easily be done in an old frame as long as it’s in good condition, but your service technician will confirm that. However, if the previous door system has had moisture issues, it’s better to replace the frame to avoid problems down the road. Otherwise, we can repair your frame by applying filler and sanding the surface. Repainting it may also revive its look, so you can install a replacement slab door without a problem.

But if your existing frame is damaged, we recommend a prehung door, which includes the structure and frame.

It can be, if you don't want to build and install a compatible frame from scratch. However, if you already have a healthy frame in place, your best bet is to get a slab, which is just the structure itself without a frame. The advantage of a prehung is that it is professionally put together and ready to go. They are naturally weather-tight, so they can keep your rooms and other living areas well-insulated. Also, you don't need to drill screw holes or prepare cutouts like you would for a slab. So there is a huge convenience.
