Mr. Handyman of Scottsdale - June Newsletter

This year marks an exciting milestone for us—we are celebrating five years of Mr. Handyman of Scottsdale!

When we opened our doors in 2021, our goal was simple: provide homeowners with reliable service, exceptional craftsmanship, and a customer experience that made caring for their homes easier. Five years later, we are incredibly grateful for the trust our customers, neighbors, and community partners have placed in us.

What started as a small local business has grown into a team of dedicated professionals who share a passion for helping homeowners throughout Scottsdale and the surrounding communities. This year alone, we've welcomed a new Customer Service Representative and two talented service professionals to our team, allowing us to serve even more homeowners with the quality and care they've come to expect.

As we welcome new team members, we'd also like to thank Dani for her contributions to our company and wish her all the best in her next adventure.  Many of you know Dani well, she was the ever chipper voice of Mr. Handyman.  She started “Day 1” with Jon and was a trailblazer in getting us to where we are now!  Thank you, Dani!

As Arizona's summer heat arrives and monsoon season approaches, we're reminded how important it is to have a trusted partner for home maintenance and repairs. That's one reason we're excited to introduce our new Home Watch Program. Whether you're traveling for the summer, a seasonal resident, or simply want extra peace of mind, our team can provide regular home check-ins to help identify potential issues before they become costly problems.

Over the past five years, we've learned that our success isn't measured by the number of projects we complete—it's measured by the relationships we build. Every repair, installation, and improvement project is an opportunity to serve our community, earn trust, and make a positive impact in the homes of our customers.

We’re excited to stay connected to you, through this newsletter. Each edition will feature seasonal home maintenance tips, company updates, community involvement, and helpful information to keep your home safe, comfortable, and well-maintained year-round.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for supporting our family-owned business over the last five years. Your referrals, reviews, and continued trust have allowed us to grow, create jobs, give back to our community, and do work we genuinely love every day.

We look forward to serving Scottsdale for many years to come.

With gratitude,

Jon & Michelle Tranter

Monsoon Season Preparation

Monsoon season is nearly here in Arizona, and it’s better to prepare ahead of time rather than looking back and wishing you had. Monsoons can be intense; the high winds, inches of rain over short periods, and dust and debris whipping around can cause damage or expose areas of your house that need repairs. Many houses in the Scottsdale area are built for the sun and the heat, but not for wind-driven rain. Below, we cover some things Scottsdale homeowners should do before the first storm hits to ensure they’re not facing tons of repairs later in the season.

3 Things to Do Before Monsoon Season

Monsoon season usually begins in mid-June, with the official start listed as June 15. This year, climate specialists are predicting a wetter-than-usual summer for Arizona, which means ensuring your house is ready for heavy rainfall is essential to preventing potential water damage.

1. Secure Things That Could Get Damaged in High Wind

Don’t underestimate monsoon winds; microburst wind speeds can reach up to 100 mph at times! Securing things around your home and yard can ensure you’re ready when those gusts come. Make sure your patio umbrellas, shade sails, and awnings are all safely stored and pulled in. If your awning mounts or shade structures need attention, give us a call before the season starts.

2. Get Your Outdoor Stuff Off the Ground

Pool floaties, yard toys, and cushions can all go flying around (and outside of) your yard once a monsoon strikes. Investing in outdoor storage cabinets or deck storage boxes is an easy way to keep these loose items secured and on your property. Mr. Handyman can assemble these storage solutions quickly, so you’re prepared once a storm warning goes out.

3. Clear Your Gutters, Then Check What's Around Them

Arizona’s dry months can leave gutters packed with debris: leaves, sticks, flowers, and more can clog a gutter. When monsoon rain comes pouring down, the clogged gutters direct water straight toward the foundation, walls, trim, and fascia of your home. Mr. Handyman handles gutter cleaning and repair, including downspout checks to ensure water goes where you want it to.

While you’re inspecting your gutters, take a look at your doors and windows, particularly the weather-stripping and seals. The desert heat can degrade caulk and weather-stripping, and any gaps will quickly become a big issue once the rain and dust storms arrive. A pre-season visit from Mr. Handyman can ensure your sealing and weather-stripping is ready for the upcoming storms.

What to Check After a Monsoon

Taking inventory of your house post-monsoon is an easy way to identify what may need repairing before the next storm hits, and can prevent more severe long-term damage. Here’s a quick list of things to look for in the 48 hours after a monsoon hits:

  • Walk the exterior, looking for damaged awnings, shifted fence panels, and debris in gutters and downspouts
  • Check doors and windows. Swollen frames, new gaps, or water stains along the sill are signs of seal failure and need replacement
  • Look up inside. Ceiling stains, bubbling paint, and soft spots near the roofline mean water got in somewhere; identify where the water entry point is
  • Inspect your deck and patio. Waterlogged wood and shifted pavers worsen quickly if left unaddressed

If you see any signs of damage, addressing it quickly can prevent bigger repairs down the road.

Selling Your Home? Here's Why Maintenance Matters More Than You Think

Selling your home can involve many moving parts and a seemingly endless to-do list. Getting the home in good shape before listing, inside and out, often does more for the final sale price than sellers expect. It can also mean fewer days on the market and less room for buyers to negotiate. This guide breaks down which repairs and updates are worth tackling before you list, and why they matter to buyers.

Buyers Decide Before They Walk In

Homebuyers tend to form their first impressions of a property largely based on what is visible from the street. This means opinions are formed before they have entered the home, opened a closet, or asked a single question. Curb appeal can play a significant role in how buyers initially perceive your home.
