Q and A: Saving Energy in the Heat

Q:  We’re seeing our energy bill spike at the temperatures rise.  What steps can we take to keep our energy bills down?

A:  This is a great question as we head into the hot summer months.  First, don’t cool your home any more than needed.  If not home during the day, set the AC for a higher temp, and program is to cool the home an hour before you arrive each evening.  Draw blinds and curtains on windows facing the sun during the day.  This reduces the need for your AC to fight the heating rays of the sun.  Inspect all exterior doors in the home for being properly sealed.  Weather stripping and door sweeps wear out and need to be replaced every few years.  Is it time?  These are all straightforward ideas that most homeowner can do themselves to better manage their energy bills.
