Adam came by to install a storm door. Seemed like it was a frustrating job but he stuck it out and got it done. I will definitely be using this company again. I called a couple of different places to try and get this done. Many said the job was too small, others didn't return calls. Very happy with the service.

They showed up on time, did a great job (permanently installing 2 ACs), worked quickly and well, and kept the place clean.

Charlie was great– very polite and professional. He has 37 years experience as a carpenter, which is why we went with the more expensive handyman company because all of their workmen are top notch. You may pay more per hour, but it saves you time in the end because these guys know what they are doing and get the job done. (They are also legal citizens and they speak English perfectly, something which is increasingly rare.) Everything was done in 2 hours– problems solved that had been bugging me for months, if not years!

The technician Lee Gregory did a fantastic job on rebuilding a kitchen drawer from 50+ year old cabinets that had seen plenty of openings & closings. Was prompt and kept time just under an hour which was greatly appreciated. Great job and thank you!!!! Will definitely use Mr. Handyman again.

Frequently Asked Questions About Deck Repair

Mr. Handyman has been helping homeowners and businesses repair, maintain, and enhance their spaces for over 25 years! We are the one-stop solution for everything on your to-do list. This includes answering your questions about home repairs, maintenance, and improvements. Here are answers to some of your most frequently asked questions about deck repair and deck installation.

  • The cost of repairing a deck often depends on deck size, materials, and the condition of the structure. Small repairs such as replacing damaged boards or tightening railings typically require less work than full deck restoration. If the damage reaches the framing or support posts, deck repair usually becomes more complex. Rot, water damage, or shifting footings may require structural repairs or replacing sections of the deck. If the same repairs keep returning, the deck may have a deeper issue. Soft decking or railings that loosen again often indicate moisture within the framing. Continuing surface level deck repair may become more expensive than correcting the structure. Pricing for deck repair is often determined during an on-site evaluation. A service professional in Allston will assess the deck, explain possible repair or replacement options, and describe the project scope.

  • In some cases, homeowners insurance may cover deck repair, but it depends on the cause of the damage rather than the repair itself. For example, damage caused by storms, fallen trees, fire, vandalism, or vehicle impact is often covered. Because decks are usually considered part of the home’s structure or an attached feature, insurance may help pay for repairs or replacement after the deductible. Damage caused by normal wear and tear or poor maintenance usually isn’t covered. Problems such as rotting boards, loose railings, aging connectors, or moisture damage are typically considered maintenance issues. If you’re unsure whether the damage qualifies for coverage, a written inspection can help when speaking with your insurance provider. Notes about damaged boards, loose railings, or structural framing can clarify whether deck repair or deck replacement may be necessary.

  • Replacing a single damaged board may seem manageable. Many deck repair projects involve more than surface materials. Framing, ledger boards, and support posts carry significant weight and require secure attachment to function properly. Improper fastening or misaligned supports can create long term structural problems. Decks connect directly to the home’s structure. Incorrect repairs near ledger boards or flashing can allow water intrusion and accelerate rot behind siding. Surface damage can hide larger problems beneath the boards. Soft decking often points to moisture in the joists below. Replacing boards without checking the framing can leave structural problems unresolved. Professional deck repair services review the framing, install hardware correctly, and follow code requirements. A qualified deck repair handyman can help address structural concerns and extend the life of the existing deck.

  • Different deck contractors structure their work in different ways. Some operate alone, some use rotating crews, and others focus mainly on new construction. The overall service experience often depends on who completes the work and how projects are managed. With Mr. Handyman, deck repair, deck refinishing, deck installation, and deck replacement are completed through a locally owned business that is licensed and insured. Homeowners work with highly-trained service professionals who handle a range of projects around the home. Scheduling and communication are handled through an established system. Your Mr. Handyman service team supports homeowners throughout Allston. Licensed professionals arrive in branded vehicles and follow a defined service process for each project. Work is coordinated through an organized scheduling system. Clear procedures guide how deck repair services are reviewed, planned, and completed. The Done Right Promise® represents the service standards followed across Neighborly home service brands. Professional accountability and customer support reinforce the overall service experience. Homeowners work with local service providers supported by a national organization.

  • Many decks benefit from refinishing every two to three years. Sunlight and moisture slowly break down the protective sealant applied to the wood. As the sealant wears away, boards become more vulnerable to water absorption and surface deterioration. Yearly deck inspections help reveal minor issues before they worsen. Small cracks, loose railings, or soft boards can often be corrected through repair services. Environmental conditions often determine how frequently deck restoration is needed. Seasonal weather cycles gradually wear down decking materials. Establishing a maintenance plan with a local deck builder in Allston helps support predictable upkeep and reduces the likelihood of unexpected deck replacement.
